So, yeah. School. I could describe all the fabulous and interesting stuff I'm reading about for school, but I'll spare you talks of surgical asepsis and pharmacokinetics. I did manage to read 3 "extra" books this month.
California by Edan Lepucki
A post-apocolyptic tale set in California's central Valley. Harsh weather and terrorist activity leave few resources for survivors. Cal and Frida escape the visages of Los Angeles for the secluded forest of central California. When they discover Frida's pregnancy, they seek help from a nearby community, only to find out that the community isn't what it seems. Will it be their saving grace or their fall from it? (4/5 stars)
Four by Veronica Roth
This is a prequel of sorts to the Divergent series told from Tobias "Four" Eaton's perspective. It tells the story of how he came to be Dauntless and the struggles he had to wrestle with to find an identity. When he realizes he's Divergent, and what that means for his future, he's determined to find a way to bring the factions down. (3.5/5 stars)
Attachments by Rainbow Rowell
Lincoln, unattached since college, gets a job doing security at a local paper. Part of his job is reading and flagging work emails that contain inappropriate content or used for personal business. It's 1999, and Y2K is on the horizon. Jennifer and Beth, two friends who work at the paper in different departments, are constantly being flagged for inappropriate emails. Lincoln begins to read their back-and-forth banter in amusement and suddenly starts to fall for Beth. When they finally meet in person, can he hide the fact that he'd been spying on them for months? Will she forgive him if she finds out? (4.5/5 stars)
Yet again, Rainbow Rowell exceeds expectations with her novel Attachments. It's got a bit of a disturbing premise, but once you get passed the whole "workplace stalker" thing, you really enjoy listening to the inner dialogue of Lincoln, as he struggles with a late-20s identity crisis. I'm on the waitlist for her newest novel "Landline". Can't wait to read it!
